A letter to Xan

Dear Xan,

The people of the Protectorate believe you're an evil witch who is taking the children in their town. Misconceptions really can ruin the way people perceive you to be. I found out that the elder's actually made up those stories and they believed that, " the witch---that is, the belief in her---made for a frightened people, a subdued people, a compliance people (Barnhill 12)." They don't even believe that you exist but still chose to make up stories about you so they can further their own agenda. I learned that the elders want to frighten people and maintain order in their town. They left those children in there knowing that animals could eat them. They elders said that, "the child wouldn't live to see the morning, and they would never hear her, never see her, never think of her again ( Barnhill 13)." The elders are the ones that are evil and feel no type of remorse for their actions. People are telling children that, "no one knows why she wants children (Barnhill 1)." They don't know that you are just as confused about why mothers are leaving their infants in the woods to possibly die. You gave these children homes and treated them like they were your own. You put them first and gave them to people who would care for them. You really were like a mother figure to Luna. You sacrificed your own life to protect Luna and knew that consequences would come with it. Don't ever for a second think that you did anything wrong. You reminded of the relationship that I have with my siblings and how I would do anything for them. You did anything you could to give Luna a better life. You did a spell on Luna that would keep her magic inside her until she turned 13. I just want you to know that you made the right choice because if you hadn't surpassed her magic, then Luna would be very dangerous. You have inspired me to do good by others even if they're not my blood. Thank you for giving Luna and many of those other children a second chance at life.

sincerely,

Fathi Horor
