The Girl Who Drank The Moon

Before Continuing past chapter 1, I thought about some of the words used to describe the witch. The words were, 'terrible and dangerous.' People told these awful stories about the witch and made her out to be someone to be feared by to the children. On page 12, we find out that there had never even been a witch. The books states, " they left her knowing that there surely wasn't a witch. There never had been a witch...the witch---that is, the belief in her---made for a frightened people, a subdued people, a compliant people (12)." Then we end up finding out that the witch in fact exists. She is introduced a few pages later and interacts with a little child crying in the woods. She says, "Done cry, you'll love the place where we are going. Once I decide which city to bring you to. They are all perfectly nice. And you'll love your new family, too. I'll see to that (23)." We end up finding out that the witch is really gentle and caring which changes everything. It's interesting to see how much deception is going on within the first few pages of the book. The elders are lying to the younger children to instill fear in them. They describe the witch to be someone evil but they are the ones leaving children in the woods to "never hear, never see, and never think of again (13)." I think this is very powerful because of the misconception going on. These adults are lying to these children because they think that it's for their own good. This is something that goes on in society within the government and within our own homes. It's not even about adults lying to children its about being lied to in general because people believe that the truth will hurt you in some way. I feel like the way Barnhill wrote this story was differently unique because it connects with the real world in some way. There are so many people who have different opinions about the witch which is just like how in real life people have different opinions whether good or bad about us.

If this book were to be filmed, I would definitely want it in color. I want to be able to see what the forest looks like during the daylight and night time. With color, we can definitely understand how unsafe the forest really is. When Xan feeds Luna moonlight, that would be better to see in color and imagine the whole process as if we were their. If it were in black and white, we wouldn't be able to see all the magic going on and the colors surrounding it.
