Why is this story set where it is?

The fact that the story is set in the graveyard is very important in this book. As Bod grows up, the graveyard to him is a place that protects him yet he thinks of it as confinement. He wants to go out there and explore the real world and talk to humans. However, he doesn't understand the dangers that lurk in the night and how he even ended up there. The graveyard is an interesting way to introduce characters that are neither living or dead. It shows the good and evil of those living in the graveyard and those living in the outside world. The characters living in the graveyard also play an important role. They are the ones that have been raising Bod and teaching him useful skills while also teaching him how to become an educated boy. When we think about a graveyard, we think of an eerie place where danger lurks. People think that graveyards are populated by things that were left from those who died. A lot of people fear death and are afraid of the "monsters" that lurk in the graveyard at night. With the story being set in the graveyard, it's a way to show the theme of death and empathy for those who are dead. It's also an interesting way to show that the monsters we fear in the graveyards, are living amongst us and are human and living. There are so many things that go on in the graveyard that are interesting to read through and learn about. Instead of setting the story in a place we don't know about, Gaiman set it in a place we know and fear. A place that's dark, yet, filled with those with positive attributes. The setting will lure the reader and make them want to continue reading and finding out how the story ends.
