How Is the main character different from you or similiar?
The main character Jacqueline is different from me in so many different aspects. First and foremost, she is living in the 1960s, where during this time, the Civil Rights Movement was happening and Jim Crow Laws were put into place. Even after the Jim Crow Laws weren't enforced anymore, her family was still afraid of sitting in the front of the bus which is something I'll never be able to relate to. Although me and Jacqueline are the same skin color, I haven't experienced a lot of things she went through. Jacqueline is also similar to me when it comes to how people were treating her. This is shown in chapter three, when Jacqueline talks about the children making fun of her and yanking her sisters braids (194). I felt like this was very similar to the way I was being treated when I was a kid and people would make fun of me and laugh and try to yank my hijab off of my head. I think a lot of people share that same experience. Also, as I was reading through the chapters, something that stood out to me was when Jacqueline was talking about how someone would be watching her when she was in the stores with her family. I've shared this similar experience where I was being racially profiled inside a small store. The lady suspected that I was stealing something and continued to follow me around like I didn't notice her even though I did. I ended up leaving the store due to how uncomfortable I was feeling in that moment. Also, Jacqueline is able to find herself and continue to follow her dream regardless of the obstacles that are in her way. I feel like I relate to that moment in particular because I've had a lot of things block me from getting to where I wanted to be in life. However, that didn't stop me from continuing to follow my dreams and I finally got to where I wanted to be.
